The Great Silence
100 x 70 cm, oil on canvas, 2007. In private collection.
The painting “The Great Silence” is an apocalyptic vision of the end of the world.
The abstract landscape is delineated by a horizon line that runs a third of the height of the painting. A blood-red sky stretches above the shrouded darkness of the water. The world is filled with emptiness. Silence is perhaps darkness’ last friend.

The gloomy landscape is built up by aggressive drawing lines, harsh textures and a piercing ashen underpainting. The dynamic drawing and high contrast create a sense of unease. The colour scheme, narrowed down to cinnabar red and cold blue, heightens the sense of drama.
